The Rh factor is a protein found on the surface of red blood cells in most people. It is also known as the Rh antigen. If an individual has the Rh protein, they are considered Rh-positive (Rh+), while those without it are considered Rh-negative (Rh-). The Rh factor is important in blood transfusions and pregnancy. If an Rh- individual receives blood from an Rh+ donor, their immune system may react to the Rh protein and trigger an immune response. This can lead to serious complications, including hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells). In pregnancy, if an Rh- mother carries an Rh+ fetus, the mother's immune system may react to the Rh protein on the fetus's red blood cells. This can lead to hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), a condition that can cause anemia, jaundice, and other complications in the newborn.
