ASO-titre (Antistreptolysin O titre) is a quantitative blood test used to diagnose and monitor infections caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS), such as strep throat and rheumatic fever. The test measures the levels of antibodies against streptolysin O, a toxin produced by GAS bacteria. When GAS bacteria infect the body, the immune system responds by producing antibodies against the bacteria's toxins, including streptolysin O. The ASO-titre test detects these antibodies in the blood, which can indicate a current or past GAS infection. The test is often used to diagnose acute rheumatic fever, a complication of strep throat that can cause inflammation and damage to the heart valves. A high ASO-titre value indicates a recent or ongoing GAS infection, while a low value may indicate a past infection or no infection at all. The test is also used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for GAS infections.
