Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) is a medical test used to evaluate the blood's clotting ability. It measures the time it takes for blood to clot after adding a substance that activates the clotting process. The test is commonly used to monitor patients taking anticoagulant medications, such as heparin, and to diagnose bleeding disorders. During the test, a blood sample is collected and mixed with a substance that activates the clotting process. The time it takes for the blood to clot is then measured. A prolonged APTT result may indicate a bleeding disorder, such as hemophilia, or the presence of anticoagulant medications. Conversely, a shortened APTT result may indicate a clotting disorder. The test is often used in conjunction with other tests, such as the prothrombin time (PT) test, to evaluate the blood's clotting ability.
