An allergy is an overreaction of the body's immune system to a harmless substance, such as pollen, dust, mold, pet dander, or certain foods. Food allergies are another type, where the body reacts to certain foods, such as peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, milk, eggs, wheat, and soy. Allergies can be managed through avoidance of the allergen, medication, and immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots.
