Anti-HCV (antibody to hepatitis C virus) is a blood test used to detect the presence of antibodies against the hepatitis C virus (HCV). These antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to HCV infection. The test is used to diagnose and screen for HCV infection, which can cause liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. A positive test result indicates the presence of anti-HCV antibodies, which suggests that a person has been exposed to the virus. However, it does not necessarily mean that the person is currently infected. A positive result must be confirmed with additional testing, such as a viral load test, to determine if the virus is actively replicating. The anti-HCV test is commonly used to screen individuals at high risk of HCV infection, such as those with a history of injecting drugs or receiving blood transfusions before 1992.
