Anti-TPO (antithyroid peroxidase) antibody, also known as anti-thyroid microsomal antibody (AMA), is a blood test used to diagnose and monitor autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. The test detects the presence of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPO), an enzyme involved in the production of thyroid hormones. In autoimmune thyroid diseases, the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, producing antibodies against TPO. The anti-TPO antibody test is highly sensitive and specific for autoimmune thyroid diseases, making it a valuable tool for diagnosis. A positive test result indicates the presence of anti-TPO antibodies, which suggests that a person may have an autoimmune thyroid disease. The test is also used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and to predict the risk of developing thyroid disease in individuals with a family history of autoimmune thyroid disease.
