Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody that plays a key role in the body's allergic response. IgE levels are measured in the blood to diagnose and monitor allergies, as well as certain parasitic infections. Elevated IgE levels are often associated with allergic conditions, such as Atopic dermatitis (eczema), Asthma, Allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Food allergies and Insect sting allergies. High IgE levels can also indicate parasitic infections, such as hookworm or roundworm infestations. In some cases, elevated IgE levels may be seen in immunodeficiency disorders or certain types of cancer. IgE levels are typically measured in kilounits per liter (kU/L). A normal IgE level is usually considered to be below 100 kU/L, although this can vary depending on the laboratory and the individual's medical history.
