Beta human chorionic gonadotropin (B-hCG) is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. It is a glycoprotein that plays an important role in maintaining the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone to support embryonic development conditions. B-hCG levels are typically measured in the blood or urine to confirm pregnancy by detecting it in the blood 6-8 days after fertilization and in the urine 10-14 days after fertilization. B-hCG levels should double every 48-72 hours during early pregnancy. Abnormal levels may indicate ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, or other complications. Elevated B-hCG levels can be associated with choriocarcinoma, germ cell tumors, and other malignancies. Normal B-hCG levels vary depending on the stage of pregnancy and the individual. In non-pregnant individuals, B-hCG levels are typically undetectable or very low (<5 mIU/mL).
