A biopsy is a medical procedure which involves removing a small sample of tissue or cells from the body for microscopic examination. The sample is typically taken from an area where there is a lump, tumor, or lesion, to diagnose or rule out various conditions, including cancer. There are several types of biopsies, including fine-needle aspiration biopsy where the doctor uses a thin needle to collect cells from a lump or tumor, core needle biopsy which uses a slightly larger needle to collect a small sample of tissue, surgical biopsy which involves surgically removing a larger sample of tissue and endoscopic biopsy that uses a flexible tube with a camera and biopsy instrument to collect tissue samples from internal organs. Biopsy results can help diagnose conditions, determine the severity of disease, and guide treatment decisions.
