CD4, also known as cluster of differentiation 4, is a protein found on the surface of certain immune cells, called T cells. CD4 cells, also known as T helper cells, play a crucial role in the immune system by helping to coordinate the immune response to infections. In individuals with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection, the virus targets and destroys CD4 cells, leading to a decline in their numbers. As a result, the immune system becomes weakened, making it harder for the body to fight off infections. The CD4 count is a blood test that measures the number of CD4 cells in the blood. It is used to monitor the health of individuals with HIV infection and to determine the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy (ART). A low CD4 count indicates a weakened immune system, while a high CD4 count indicates a healthy immune system.
