Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is an enzyme found in many organs, including the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. It plays a crucial role in the transfer of amino acids and peptides, and is often used as a marker of liver damage or disease. Elevated levels of GGT in the blood can indicate liver damage, inflammation, or disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. GGT levels can also be elevated in individuals who consume excessive amounts of alcohol, as well as in those with pancreatic or kidney disease.
