The Indirect Coombs Test (ICT) is a medical test used to detect the presence of antibodies in the blood that are directed against red blood cells. The test is also known as the Indirect Antiglobulin Test (IAT). It is typically performed to identify individuals who have developed antibodies against red blood cells, which can cause a transfusion reaction or hemolytic disease of the newborn. During the test, a sample of blood is mixed with red blood cells from a donor. If the blood contains antibodies against the donor red blood cells, they will bind to the cells. The mixture is then mixed with antihuman globulin (AHG), which reacts with the bound antibodies, causing the red blood cells to clump together. The ICT is a sensitive test that can detect the presence of antibodies against red blood cells, helping to ensure safe blood transfusions and prevent adverse reactions.
