The LE Cell Test is a laboratory test used to diagnose Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), a chronic autoimmune disorder. The test detects the presence of a specific type of antibody in the blood, known as the lupus erythematosus (LE) cell factor. This antibody is produced by the immune system and attacks the body's own tissues, leading to inflammation and damage. The LE Cell Test involves mixing a patient's blood sample with a sample of normal white blood cells. If the patient has SLE, the LE cell factor in their blood will cause the white blood cells to change shape and form a characteristic "LE cell" pattern. The test is then examined under a microscope to look for the presence of these LE cells. A positive result indicates that the patient may have SLE, although further testing is often needed to confirm the diagnosis.
