A platelet count, also known as a platelet test or thrombocyte count, is a blood test that measures the number of platelets in the blood. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, irregularly-shaped blood cells that play a crucial role in blood clotting. A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter (?L) of blood. A low platelet count which is also known as thrombocytopenia, can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. On the other hand, a high platelet count known as thrombocytosis increase the risk of blood clots. The platelet count test is an important diagnostic tool used to evaluate the risk of bleeding or blood clots, and to monitor the effectiveness of treatments for conditions that affect platelet count, such as cancer or autoimmune disorders.
